Do you have children that you just sent back to school? If you don’t, you likely have friends or family that have children that just went back to school. And, if you follow any social media at all you probably saw ‘first day’ pictures. I always enjoy seeing all the ‘first day’ pictures. I also enjoy the conversations around the change in routine from a summer routine to a back to school routine. I remember growing up how excited I was to start school and how big of a deal it was, and we didn’t even take first day pictures.
What About You? Are You Going Back To School?
If you are not going back to school, have you thought about what you can do to learn something new or improve a skill? What can you do to continue growing your knowledge and growing yourself? If the answer to that is nothing, I’m here to tell you that you should consider changing that. And now is as good a time as any to think about this, especially if you are getting into a new routine.
I’ve previously written blogs focused on things that you can, and should, be doing to continue growing. You should make time for personal development. It doesn’t matter if you are in the pursuit of a special goal; personal development will always help you in your life and it will always help you improve.
My Current Personal Development List
Right now I am reading a couple books and I am listening to an audio book. I am currently reading Becoming Your Best by Steven R. Shallenberger and I am also reading The Success Principles by Jack Canfield. Yes, I really am juggling two books. I read one each night right before I go to bed and the other I read on Sunday mornings. The audio book is what I listen to when I get ready in the morning. It’s been around for a few years, but I just recently got a hold of it and started listening to it. It’s Crush It by Gary Vaynerchuk, and it is really good. It doesn’t matter what type of business you are in, or if you are just thinking about starting a business, it is full of great information. Gary shares about his life growing up, but he mostly shares a ton of tips and information on building a business and a brand. I’ll tell you, I’m glad that I’m listening to the audio because Gary narrates it and he ad libs. He goes off script and shares information about things that he just thinks of, as well as things that he learned after writing the book; it’s valuable and entertaining. If you enjoy audio books I encourage you to check it out.
Why Is Personal Development Important?
It is never a bad idea to continue learning, growing and challenging yourself. In fact, there are solid health benefits to keeping your mind engaged and active. I read something positive before I go to bed every night because I want to make sure that I am putting something positive in my mind. I’ll be honest with you, sometimes I’ll say, “All right, I’m gonna read for 10 minutes,” and I can only go 5 because I’m ready to fall asleep. That’s still okay because I get some positive reading in and I am able to fall asleep quickly.
I encourage you to look at your schedule and find a little pocket or two of time that you can read, or listen to an audio book, or video. Time that is focused on YOU and your personal development. Commit to yourself that you will pursue some sort of personal development.
Go out there and crush it; commit to personal development and do something for you, it will be worth it.
