Today I’m going to share three things with you. I’m going to share why I’ve started doing Facebook Lives, some of the obstacles I faced when doing my first Facebook Live, and I’m going to talk about a very important lesson that I was reminded of over the past couple of weeks.
Why I Started Doing Facebook Lives
I started doing Facebook Lives because I actually like doing videos, and I generally do three or four videos a week, but I wasn’t sharing them broadly. I have a lot of friends that are doing Facebook Lives and when I look at Facebook there are a lot of Facebook Lives on my newsfeed. The thing about Facebook Lives is that they are very interactive, you get to have conversations with people that join in to watch your Live. That’s the reason that I’m doing Facebook Lives; they are more interactive and fun.
Obstacles I Faced When Doing My First Facebook Live
Let’s talk about the obstacles I encountered as I prepared for my first Facebook Live. I am a perfectionist and I tend to want everything to be perfect. In preparing for my Facebook Live, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to make it perfect. Thank goodness that I was on a time schedule; had I not been on a time crunch, I probably would have continued trying to perfect my Live and I probably wouldn’t have actually done it.
Let me share with you a few details. I really wanted to be outside, so I set up a bench on top of a table and I put some cushions in a chair to lift myself up. It was going to be perfect, until two things happened. The sun moved and suddenly it was glaring in my face making a horrible picture, and there were birds that sounded like the predator. I kid you not, you know that little click-click-click-click-click-click sound that the predator makes? Yeah, I heard that out in my yard. As a result I had to move my Facebook Live inside.
The Importance of Setting Goals
The final thing that I want to share with you is something that I already knew, but was reminded over the last couple of weeks – goal setting. I’m a list maker. Are you a list maker? If you’re a list maker you probably make lists for a couple of reasons. One reason is because it helps you keep track of what it is you need to do, and the second reason is because you get to check items off the list when you complete them.
Writing down your goals is very similar. If you set goals and you actually write them down, you can reference them to make sure that you’re staying on track, and you get to celebrate at the end of the week when you accomplish them and check them off. Even if you don’t finish all of your goals, if you wrote them down, chances are you have finished at least a few of them and you were able to check them off.
I’ll tell you what happened that reminded me how important it is to write down my goals. I set a long term vision and I set my shorter term goals. For a few weeks in a row I actually wrote them down. I went through the proven goal setting process, on Sunday night I planned out my goals and wrote them out. I went through the week and each day I was making sure I was accomplishing my goals and checking them off. I got to Friday, and I had met my goals, and it felt really good.
Then there was a week that I thought, “You know what? I’ll be able to do this without writing my goals down.” So I didn’t write them down. And I’ll tell you what happened. I did not accomplish as much as I had hoped or as much as I would have liked to because I didn’t write them down. So guess what? I’m writing them down now. My advice to you is if you’re really trying to accomplish something, write your goals down. I know I’m not the first person to tell you that, but hopefully my example will encourage you to at least try it. Try it for four weeks and write your goals down every single week. Check it every single day and check off your goals as you accomplish them. At the end of the four weeks see if it made a difference in how much you accomplished.
I hope you got value out of this; if you did, please let me know. If you know someone else that would get value out of this, please feel free to share it with them.
