Do you ever wonder whether or not goal setting is important? And what about the process of goal setting, do you ever think about whether or not you need to write your goals down? In this post I will share my experience with goal setting and some tips that have helped me improve my goal setting and goal accomplishment.
Goal Setting For Success
Not only is it very important to have goals; it’s important to have written goals. And not just any written goals, goals that are action oriented and written weekly.
If you truly wish to achieve your goals you need to get into the habit of weekly goal setting. Your goals should be specific and action oriented. Why an action oriented goal you ask? Because you can control action oriented goals where you can’t necessarily control a results oriented goal. An example of an action oriented goal would be I will work out three times this week, or I will write two blogs this week.
Another effective goal setting tip is to have goals for the different roles in your life. You could set personal goals, business goals, goals for you as a spouse or parent, community goals, etc. This helps you in a couple of ways, it helps you stay balanced in all areas of your life, and it helps you excel in all areas of you life.
My Experience With Goal Setting
I have always been a goal setter, but I had my goals in my mind. And my results were inconsistent, sometimes I would achieve them, and sometimes I wouldn’t. Truth be told, most often I wasn’t measuring or monitoring my goals very closely.
When I decided that I wanted to make some changes and I had goals that I wanted to achieve, I started a new goal setting routing. Every Sunday evening I determine my goals for the following week and I write them down. I have my goals broken down into four different roles, sometimes five depending on the time of year and what things I have going on in my life.
I check my progress a couple of times a week, usually on Wednesday and Friday so I can see where I am and whether or not I need to adjust my activities to ensure I reach my goals. This has been working extremely well for me. I tested it, I went one week without writing my goals down, and guess what, I didn’t accomplish as much. Now I am very deliberate in my goal setting routine and I hold myself accountable for doing it every single week.
I encourage you to try it, at least for a couple of weeks, I am confident that you will see a difference.
