Have you ever really thought about your community, or the communities you belong to, and why they are so important? When I say community what’s the first thing that comes to your mind. You are probably thinking about community in terms of your local community because that’s usually what people think of when they think of community. Local community can certainly span the miles, and if you think about the support from across the country in response to the devastation caused by the recent hurricanes, it’s proof that your local community can be quite large.
Let’s Expand On Community
Clearly as mentioned above, you have your local communities which can be your neighborhood, your city, your county, etc. What other communities do you belong to? If you are active in a church or religious group, that’s a community, isn’t it? If you have children in school you are likely part of a school community; you may even be part of the community from your college or school. Most people don’t think about this one, but if you have a job and a workplace, you are part of that workplace community. Are you part of any professional organizations or groups? What about the charities you support, there is a community surrounding them, right? And you can’t forget about the communities you have built within social media; that may be your most active and engaged community involvement.
Where Am I Going With This?
Why am I talking about community? It’s because being part of a community is very important. Let’s start with something to get you thinking. Have you ever watched those TV shows where someone goes off to be by themselves and they are secluded? Have you ever wondered if you could do that, go off and live by yourself? I will tell you that maybe for a split second I thought it would be cool to just go off the grid, but I can’t imagine total seclusion with no one around. If I could be with family I may be able to do that for a month or two, but not longer. The reason is because I enjoy being part of a community; in fact most people have strong desires to be part of a community.
If you think beyond the basic essentials of the most important things people inherently need to survive and thrive, what is it? It’s fulfillment, belonging and support.
That’s what a community gives you. It comes in various ways and is different depending on the community, but it’s there. Consider this – most of the time a community is built by people with similar interests, and it is that interest that attracted you to the community. Your community has some type of mission or purpose and working together the community members achieve or accomplish the objectives of the community. You get fulfillment from what the community has accomplished and because you worked together the group provided support and a sense of belonging.
But Wait, There’s More
If you think about the most influential and successful people you have to agree that they did not get where they are by themselves. Think about where they got their knowledge, their experience, their relationships, networks, resources? It came from the various communities to which they belonged. Those are the additional things that you get from a community. You have the benefit of a group of like minded people with different experiences and backgrounds so you can share knowledge, you make connections, you build relationships. Within that community you meet people that you may not have met otherwise.
Imagine for a minute your engagement with an active community to which you belong. You get inspiration from conversations or activities, you often get an opportunity to share and discuss opinions and ideas and through networking within the community you make connections and build relationships that can open the door to all kinds of great things. And depending on the community, you may have access to different types of training and other materials that they offer to the group.
And One More Thing
How can your community help you with your mindset? If you’ve followed me for any amount of time you know that I work really hard to maintain a positive mindset. I work really hard to show up every day in a manner that will have a positive impact on others. I’ll be honest, to be consistent with that I can’t do it alone. I look to my community to help give me inspiration and to empower me. And it works, that‘s what community can do for you, it can give you so many things to help you succeed and be happy in life.
I can talk all day long about community, those that I am part of and how they have made a difference in my life, but I won’t do that because I know you have a life to live and a difference to make.
I hope that was helpful and got you thinking about your community and community engagement. If you’d like to hear more feel free to reach out to me.
